You have to successfully complete the game to 
unlock more characters. Each time you complete 
the game you'll get more characters. 

Alternate costumes
------------------
Each character in game has four different costumes, 
that can be used in any mode except Story. 
To use one of these costumes, hold 
down: R1, R2, L1, or L2 while selecting the character 
of your choice.
