Don't confine yourself to the track. Keep your eye on the overhead
map for the next checkpoint, but go ahead, cut corners!
Faster framerates:

Download the Eat My Dust track editor. It's probably the only auto
racing editor currently in existence, and it comes with an extra
item for the Options menu entitled "Slow Tunnels?". Checking this
box will erase tunnel texture and make the frame rate far more
bearable.
