Unlike first person shooters which force players to both interact and shoot inside of a world, rail shooters are primarily designed just for the shooting aspect. Pre-programmed paths have the characters go by themselves without the human player having to worry about controlling his/her person. This allows for more expansive fun when it comes to aiming the crosshairs of a gun, and popping multiple targets. Virtua Squad 2, better known as Virtua Cop 2, is a rail gun shooting game on the PC. Originally developed in the arcades by Sega, and ported over to the Saturn, it has finally made its way to the computer. Expect lots of 3D-binding action, explosions, hostages, and obstacles to prevent you from protecting the public. Lock n' load, partner, we're going for a ride! Contributing/Feedback ---------------------------- If you have any contributions, feedback, or strategies you'd like to have added to the guide, contact me via e-mail or on GameFAQs. I'll be more than content to add your segment of information, and will also provide credit. If you have any questions you'd like added to the Common Questions section, ask. For the people who despise FPS's, you don't have to worry about pesky movement, or interaction. Instead, the game is programmed to move for you, and all you have to do is shoot. Sega established the rail gun shooting genre over the past few years in the arcades, by creating games like Clock Tower, Virtua Cop, and House of the Dead. People could holster a plastic weapon, and shoot it as if it was the real thing. Rail gun games have lots of targets that pop up from beyond obstacles, barriers, and sticky situations. Not only does the player have to be quick, but they have to use their eye to ensure that they're not shooting an innocent person. Virtua Squad 2, or Virtua Cop 2, is the sequel to the original game that hit the arcades. You're basically a police officer in the VCPD (Virtua Cop Police Department). Your job and duty is to react to emergency situations, and put an end to hostilities WHILE protecting the public. You'll come across various scenarios, such as a bank robbery, cruise ship heist, and even subway skirmish. The game is viewed from a partial 2D/3D perspective. The actual gameplay takes place from the first person view of a police officer, but the actual environment and enemies look like 3D polygons. This was great technology during the mid 1990s where graphics and gaming were both expanding. Thankfully, you have an infinite amount of ammunition. Still, you have to constantly reload by clicking a specific button each time your chamber is low or out. Can you protect the loyal citizens of your city? Or will you die like a fallen hero? ---------------------------- _____________________ ##### GAME INFO ##### //////////|\\\\\ Players: 1-2 Developer: Sega Released: 1997 Rarity: fairly rare Special Features: online multiplayer mode, Direct 3D compatible ESRB: Teen Cover Art on box: - Shows three officers holding their pistols up high -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================ - 2) Game Basics - ============================ The PC works extremely well to the entire theme of the game. First of all, the control scheme works like a charm thanks to the mouse-controlled crosshair. While you take the disadvantage of not being able to use a light gun on the monitor, the mouse gives you precision shots and reaction times. Go to the arcade if you want to use the zapper. Aside from that, the left click fires a bullet, and the right click reloads. How much more simpler do you want to get? - The following is a list of recommended game controls. You can set them by going to the Device Settings menu, or pressing F7. _________ /Controls/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Left Click - fires bullet Right Click - reloads chamber F3 - pauses game ALT + F2 - restarts game F4 - shows settings F7 - shows device settings ALT + F4 - exits program F9 - multiplayer mode ALT - opens up Windows menu at top of screen - The above controls are designed for somebody who will be using the mouse as their primary device. You may use the keyboard, and set the keys to whatever you desire. Your weapon in the game is a semi-automatic pistol, so keep clicking the left button to rapid fire. You only have 6 bullets to a chamber, so reload when you're low OR out of ammo. You can reload even when there are bullets left in the chamber. There's no limit on ammo, either. Pausing the game halts all action. Device settings allow you to customize the controls to the game. Multiplayer mode pops up a window requesting the method of how you want to play online. This game use to be HEAT compatible (before they shut down). The easiest way is to simply connect to someone's IP who is running a host game. ___________ /HUD Screen/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Since this is a first person shooter (in a sense), it's essential to understand the layout of the screen. Certain important messages or symbols have to be interpreted by the player in order to understand your current status. The following section will briefly describe the screen layout. ___________________________________________ | | | | | ___ / | | / / | | / [4] | | ___ / | | / * /___/ | | /*[2]* / | | * * / _ | | _*_/ {_} | | [3] | | [1] | | /=/=/=/= CREDITS [6] | | |^||^||^||^| [5] | |___________________________________________| [1] - LIFE BAR - This is basically how many units of life you have left before a credit is disposed of. Each time you're hit by an enemy bullet, your life bar will decrease by one bar. You start off with four per credit. [2] - AMMO INDICATOR - This shows how many bullets are left in the chamber of your weapon. Your default weapon can only hold six bullets at once. It should appear empty when you run out. Bullets will be depleted after each shot is fired. [3] - CROSSHAIR - This is what you use when aiming at opponents. All shots fired will ALWAYS hit the center of this reticle. Do not worry about recoil or errant shots. A blue crosshair represents player one, and a pink one shows off player two. [4] - TARGET - Each time a new enemy appears on screen, a yellow circular target will surround them. This is suppose to be used by the player to locate new hostile threats. Take these people out immediately, otherwise, you will be shot by the enemy. Certain enemies on screen may not be targeted, especially ones running around in the background or fake shooting. You may shoot these hostiles anyway to increase your overall points total. Be CAREFUL not to shoot innocent civilians. [5] - CREDITS - A credit is just another word for how many lives you have. Treat them this way. During a two player game, credits are shared, so be cautious. [6] - PLAYER TWO INTERFACE - If a second player joins the game, this is where all of their status information will be displayed. It's the same as a single player one, except mirrored. __________________________ /Tips, Terms, and Pointers/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Before you can jump into the action, it's best to understand some of the hidden elements of Virtua Cop 2. This section will describe some of the in- game terms for new players, unique options, and ways of enhancing the gameplay. ___________ ++'_ TERMS _/'++ - JUSTICE SHOT - "Whenever you shoot somebody in the hand, or hit the enemy's weapon, you'll perform a special justice shot. This is one of the highest point shots you can get as it's a shot which does not fatally wound your target, but rather incapacitates them. Usually yields around 1700 to 1800 points." - 3 POINT SHOT - "If you manage to get 3 shots on one body without hitting them for a justice shot, or head shot, then you'll pull off a three-point shot. Three point shots multiply the first intial shot by 3. You can usually get the highest score by hitting your target rapidly before the target crosshair locks on. Most rewards range from 1200 to 1400 points." - TARGET COLORS - "The target lock-on, which you'll use frequently throughout the game, actually changes colors the longer it is locked on to one person. The initial color is blue, which quickly shifts to yellow, then orange, and finally red. When the target reaches red, the enemy will fire its gun, meaning you'll lose one unit of life. It's easy to tell that you've been hit because you'll see a shattered bullet hole on your screen. Nailing someone before a lock-on occurs yields bonus points." - CIVILIANS - "Throughout each scene on a certain level, there will be a set amount of hostages or civilians that randomly pop up. Your goal is to NOT shoot them, otherwise you'll lose a unit of life, and get a deduction in your overall score. Civilians will always scream saying not to shoot. When you hear this sound, be weary of one to pop up at any second. You get a huge bonus if you spare all civilians on a level." - SCORING SYSTEM - "At the end of each level, your shots, hit, accuracy, bonus points, and civilians saved are taken into effect. A total points tally is recorded, and added on to your next score. Earning the best score at the end of the game increases your ranking, which can then be shown off against friends or other competitors." >> SCORE (shows current score total) GANGSTERS (shows how many gangsters you hit) CIVILIANS (shows how many civilians you shot) SHOTS (shows how many shots were fired by you) HITS (shows how many direct hits were fired) ACCURACY % (gives a fraction of how accurate you were, hits/shots) - WEAPON POWERUPS - "Throughout the game, you'll come across several weapon upgrades that can be obtained by destroying certain objects, or shooting certain enemies. When you shoot these powerups, your weapon will be upgraded to the characteristics of the new weapon. Here's what each of them are, along with their effects/advantages: ________________________________________________________________________ / Name | Bullets | Reloadable? | Effect | |========================================================================= | MAGNUM | 07 | Yes | Wall-piercing bullets | | SHOTGUN | 06 | Yes | Larger bullet spread | | AUTOMATIC | 15 | Yes | Larger clipped pistol | |MACHINE GUN | 30 | No | Automatic fire | |========================================================================= "Note that if you're shot while holding a powerup, you will lose that powerup. You may also lose it if you shoot enough hostages, that a new credit must be used (to revive you). - ADDITIONAL OPTIONS - "If you check out the options menu by pressing the ALT key, there are several features you can change. Screen resolutions, the type of method used to draw pictures, and audio options can be adjusted. Before starting a game, check out the Mode Settings (F6). You can add the following options: * Single Click Reload <=> allows for quick reloads with the right click * Random Mode <=> enemies now appear in random spots during Arcade Game, rather than their preset ones * Mirror Mode <=> all enemy appearances are mirrored, to make memorization more tough * Big Head Mode <=> everyone has gigantic heads -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================ - 3) Arcade Game - ============================ This is the primary gameplay mode of Virtua Squad 2. You'll find yourself playing this mode for the most part because of its constant action, and reviving fun. Unfortunately, it's only limited to three large levels, and minimal expansion. Regardless, it's still great to show off your quick trigger finger in front of friends or family. This section will walk you through each of the three levels, along with the alternate routes. ___________________ FILE 1 /##################/______________________________________________________ /. SCENARIO: Robbers have stormed the jewelry store; stop them! /_. DIFFICULTY: Easy /__. CODE NAME: Big Chase! The level begins with you stepping out of your police cruiser right in the middle of the heist. Most of the men you will encounter will be basic thugs. Watch for people around corners as you take a quick pass-by the front of the store. There are about 4 hostages in total inside the bank. Most will pop out from behind the jewelry display cases. You may also want to nail a few wandering thugs in the background, especially ones carrying the cases. Once you've cleared it out, you'll then reboard your police car. Now it's time for a little chase. Watch for the civilians that run by your car. A few regular cars will pull up with men popping out of the sides. An excellent way of taking these men out is to shoot one of the tires on the car several times. Most cars will lose their tire, flip, and roll over. You don't have to worry about any of the targets in that car. Certain cars are programmed not to flip, so hold back your fire if it doesn't flip after a few shots. At the second intersection (where you make a left), a hostage will be hanging out of one of the cars. Be steady with the shot. Eventually, the armored van you were chasing will run into two squad cars. This next area will be an urban battle on the streets, along with the empty- window building. When all of the windows open, and several men pop out, take out the guy in the lower right corner to receive a life unit. After you have taken your destination, you'll arrive at the construction site of a large building. Start taking out the guards around the perimeter. A few men with axes will try to sneak their way into your line of sight. Pelt them immediately. You can get an automatic pistol from a thug on the right, and a Machine Gun from a crate box on the left. Shoot one of the men on the platforms to have him drop below to reveal it. I'd personally keep the Automatic. You'll then flush out any remaining men behind pipes and elements of the such. There are a few hostages along the way as well, so check your fire. =*BOSS*= | | Muscular Gang Leader - The battle ensues with him yelling that he's up above. Typical juggernaut. He basically has two attacks. He'll toss large metal barrels at you, which means you have to shoot to destroy them. He'll also shoot rockets from a launcher in his hand. Nail the barrels, hit the rockets, then keep shooting him. Each time, he'll retreat back to grab a new projectile. When his life bar is extremely low, he'll toss a Coffee truck at you. Shoot it several times, then finish him off for 5,000 points. ___________________ FILE 2 /##################/______________________________________________________ /. Your situation starts off with our courageous hero stepping out on the Pier right in front of the ship. There are going to be a few hostages on the docks, so watch your fire. Many of them will be running across in a crouched position. Take out the men near the front, and watch out for the helicopter. Once you're inside the greeting terminal, take care of the close range combatants. Go up the stairs, and take out the men by the computer terminal. Knock off the rightmost computer on the desk to receive the Magnum. This baby has quite some power behind it. Be careful though as you can pierce walls and actually hit targets behind certain structures. Continue through the place, until you reach the end of the terminal. There are five soldiers with jetpacks that fly around shooting rockets at you. Shoot each of the rockets whenever they get extremely close, and try to concentrate your fire on one target. Each man has a limited life bar, so taking them down one at a time ensures you have less rockets to deal with at once. All of these men killed will total to 5,000 points. ___________________ FILE 3 /##################/______________________________________________________ /. SCENARIO: Terrorists are hijacking a bomb via the subway. /_. DIFFICULTY: Expert /__. CODE NAME: Railline Shootout! This mission will consist of primarily black-clad terrorists, and a plethora of army men. Start off by entering the subway station, and taking out the men around the corners. Watch for the two hostages by the entrance to the subway tunnel. Once you're inside the subway carts, watch for people to run out of the aisles. You'll eventually crawl out to look above. Take out the men who pop their heads up, along with the gunners in the helicopter. Once you board off of the subway cart, you'll have more men to deal with in the station. As you scroll across the middle portion of the room, look in the background for two men running away. Shoot one of them to get an extra Life Unit. Enter the large warehouse up ahead. There are no hostages, but lots of men with rifles. Take the long range shots, and shoot the barrels on the moving carts for easy riddance of annoying targets. You'll know you've reached the boss when you enter a yellow/brown room. =*BOSS*= | | Green Mechanical Tank - This battle is tougher for the average player. To start off, you need to shoot the two armpits of the robot to disable the small joints. From here on, strictly shoot the arms until they both fall off. Then, concentrate your fire on the main hull to destroy that. The mechanic should fall out, and you can take him out with three well-placed shots before he can wrench you. Note that this robot will whip you with its arms if you don't get enough shots on the armpits. You'll also have to deal with rockets launched at you early on. ___________________ FILE 4 /##################/______________________________________________________ /. SCENARIO: The master plan has been foiled, but the villain is escaping. /_. DIFFICULTY: Very Easy /__. CODE NAME: Stop the Airship Bomb! Apparently you have foiled the master plan of the villain all along. His Airship Bomb has been destroyed, and the structure is collapsing in the background. However, he has one deed left to finish - you! Right when the battle starts, keep shooting him. He'll basically be suspended in a status of his own pain. As long as you keep shooting/reloading, he will not be able to attack you in any way whatsoever. Easiest boss battle of the game. *Congratulations. You have completed all of the scenarios, and have saved the city's loyal citizens from the corrupt gangs of society. You've completed one heck of a day, and it's time you get a break. You'll see some terrorists surrendering, along with fellow police officers slapping hands. Finally, you and your partner get in your cruiser, and drive off into the beautiful sunset.* [[ THE END ]] -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================ - 4) Proving Grounds - ============================ Just when you thought the fun ended with Arcade Game mode, it just happens to be extended in the Proving Grounds. The Proving Grounds is a training simulation where you go head-to-head against an opponent with several bad guys. The idea is to take out your human opponent within a limited amount of time, while worrying about innocent civilians, thugs, and the human opponent too. Basically, you pick an arena to start in: (((((( Field 1 -> Industrial Sector (((((( Field 2 -> Balcony Room (((((( Field 3 -> City Street After you pick an arena, you have about two seconds to select a spot where you want to start from. You and your opponent will start off at opposite ends. Depending where you start, your target locator will automatically zoom in on the closest target. Sometimes you'll get lucky, and you'll have an instant lock on your opponent. Other times, you'll keep locking onto bad guys. You then have 5 seconds to shoot your human opponent, otherwise, you will lose a life unit. His/her surrounding bad guys will also be taking shots at you, which means you have to shoot them as well. Each time you're hit by a bad guy, you will be frozen for one second. - There are no real strategies for the Proving Grounds because everything is random. It all comes down to which starting point YOU select, along with which one your opponent does. Your lock-on locator will not always pick the best target. This means if you quickly pass by your opponent, you'll have to make a manual potshot in order to hit him. The games last for 3 sets, with four life units composing each set. Just try to mix up your starting positions, and hope for the best. -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================= - 5) Codes - ============================= Most PC games are fairly easy to get codes for. Either developers added little secret type-in codes, or trainers to enhance the gameplay. Virtua Squad 2 tends to not have much, despite a few helpful cheats here and there. Most of them require some work, just to get them to execute. I'd like to give credit to: http://www.gamewinners.com/ - for providing these useful cheats. - PLAY AS SMARTY - Hold down the reload key right after selecting Stage One to become Smarty. - CHEAT MODE - Edit the vcop2.ini file in the Virtua Squad 2 directory. Add the line: Extra=2 right under the [GameSetting] heading. Save the changes (make a backup of the original just in case). Start the game and press F6 to access the special and cheat sections. -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================ - 6) Common Questions - ============================ )) Gameplay (( ---------------------------- << How do I obtain Virtua Squad 2? >> - First of all, try to think of it as Virtua Cop 2. The series is formally known as Virtua Cop, however, Sega renamed it on the PC for technical purposes. The idea of online multiplayer seemed to be the key spark plug. Since this game was released in 1997, and is hard to find, eBay is your best choice. You can still find CD copies to this day. However, if your choices are limited, you may always want to visit the arcade and see if there's a spare machine around. If worst meets worst, you can purchase it for the Sega Saturn along with a light gun for maximum pleasure. << Is this the best game in the entire series? >> - I'm not too sure myself. I'd have to say that Virtua Cop 2 was VERY short for a shooting game. With only three levels, there isn't much more to look forward to. The original is fairly short as well, but most people tend to enjoy it. Virtua Cop 3 seems to have the most variations, and probably would be your best choice if you had to pick one out of the bunch. -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ====================================================== - 7) Copyright/Distribution/Reproduction Guidelines - ====================================================== This FAQ/Strategy Guide/Walkthrough is my own published work, and copyrighted by Christopher Zawada.
