Doom 3 – Eastereggs

Doom 3 - Eastereggs

================================================================================
*Unofficial* id Software Doom 3 easter-eggs guide by SlavaOzonov (JonnSmithy),
partially cited in Grawl Doom3 FAQ (posted at IGN, GameFaqs, DLH.net,
neoseeker, too).

Look for my Silent Hill 4: The Room easter egg and a few references guide
on the same site you are reading this.

This guide contains some slight SPOILERS to the game and plot,
you may spoil the gaming pleasure by reading it.
Also it could contain slight spoilers of movies and other games
(if easter-egg reference requires ).

!Last update -- 3 of october: 22 easter-eggs total,
added 3 easter-eggs.
Removed Easter-Egg 0 (actually, it wasn't easter-egg).

update of 29 of september: 19 easter-eggs total (some of them from eegg15)
edited almost all easter-eggs. Added one doubtful picture-puzzle
(as easter-egg 0).

update of 11 of september: 15 easter-eggs total, edited egg15.

update of 10 of september : 15 easter-eggs total, added 1 multi-egg,
edited egg8.

update of 8 of september: 14 easter-eggs total, edited eegg11 and 10,
added cheats for finding easter-eggs (they are on my webpage).

This FAQ was posted on www.gamefaqs.com, www.IGN.com, http://dlh.net,
also neoseeker.com.
So they have some legal rights for this.

WARNING: this game was rated 17+ by ESRB (ages 17 and above),
see http://www.esrb.org/search_results.asp?key=doom&type=game.
Age rating for your country may differ.
Some materials in this guide may be for at least ages 17+ too.

In case you know some other easter-eggs
(if i may cite them here, i'll credit you) or have any questions on these
(not covered on my webpage), mail me: XjonnnysmithyX@yahoo.com
(remove "X"'s from address, it's protection from sp@m).
I'm not checking e-mail every day and answering all of them, sorry.
Also tell me if you want your nickname/e-mail address to be shown
(though this site policy is prohibiting anything morally wrong.
So i don't guarantee including it if the words it contains are
restricted). The same applies to your nickname.

!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now i have backup page (mirror page), though pictures are on original site,
so if traffic limit will be hit, the pictures still won't show.
So my two addresses now are http://www.geocities.com/jonnsmithy2/eeggs.htm
and http://www.geocities.com/jonnsmithy/eeggs.htm.

Any other address besides these two is not my address.

Cheats for finding easter-eggs are at the
http://www.geocities.com/jonnsmithy2/cheats.htm
and
http://www.geocities.com/jonnsmithy/cheats.htm

My web-page is updated more frequently than this guide.
So if you e-mail me with easter-egg that was posted on web-page,
you won't get credit (you could have seen it on my page).
Otherwise, i'll give credit to everyone who e-mailed me.
!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please note: All trademarks and company names, also all data
mentioned here is property of respective owners.
I don't have any relation with them.

In case you don't want to scroll to find what you want,
you could use search function:
in MS Internet Explorer/WordPad -- use menu Edit -- Find on this page (Ctrl+F),
search for "eeggNumber", for example "eegg8" to search (and jump instantly)
for magazines easter-egg.

BTW, official in-game web-page addresses --
http://www.martianbuddy.com/ and
http://www.ua-corp.com/
really exist.

In case you don't know about console:
first escape to game menu,
bring console up by pressing Ctrl+Alt+tilde (the key beneath Esc
and to the left of "1",
symbol -- "`" or "~"), then type whatever the command is, then press Enter.
For example, to load the second game map/level:
press Ctrl+Alt+tilde (press Ctrl, holding it, press alt, holding it,
press tilde, release all keys, no matter which first),
type "map game/mars_city2" (without quotes), press Enter.
The level will load (you'll have some weapons).
In case the console won't hide by itself, close it by pressing
the same key combination.
Also you could type "com_allowconsole 1" in console (as usually,
without quotes and press Enter then. There is space before "1")
so now you could bring it just by pressing tilde key.
Though, it's only until you exit the game.

Easter-egg 1

map: Mars City (the first one, the very beginning of the game),
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"common area" (kitchen),
savefile place name: "Mars City",
console cheat command to load map: "map game/mars_city1".

Q: How it can be done?
A: It can be done by going to kitchen on first level,
then coming up to the arcade machine,
called "Nabcon Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3" and then playing it
(use your "fire" key") for some time continually
(or maybe for some score). I played it for about 15 minutes,
then i received e-mail to my PDA:

"
From: HR Coordinator
Subject: New High Score!
Date: 12-12-2145

Congratulations! You set a new high score in Super Turbo Turkey
Puncher3 !!!

Your parents can rest easier knowing they have raised another shining
example of humanity.

Due to the incredible amount of time you wasted punching poor
defenseless turkeys, your vacation time has been docked two days.

Have a nice day.
"

BTW, note the date, the game plot starts on 11-15-2145, "id thanks"
easter-egg/secret is dated 11-16-2145.

Q: What all this stuff (beating turkey) means?!
A: On arcade display: the walls in background, fist with knuckle,
man face in upper-left corner
(and his animation) are from id Software 3D game, Doom (or Doom 2),
the turkey is from ???, the joke is because guys at id Software loved (loves?)
fighting games (yes, by gamers, for gamers):

"
Work on Spear of Destiny was hindered by the purchase of these following games:
NEO-GEO-Fatal Fury (which Jay Wilbur called "Fatal Productivity"),
and SUPER NINTENDO-Street Fighter II.
Thanks a lot, you other dang game makers!
"
it's from this webpage:
"http://www1.linkclub.or.jp/~clubey/Mac Wolf/wolf.trivia.html"
(yes, it contains space).

The name of game was like: Capcom Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

Q: But why the turkey?!
A: See my webpage.

Q: The game must be stuffed with things like this?
A: Maybe, like on desk (and toilet) not far from the arcade machine: "Booty"
magazine with picture of woman,
who look like id Software Quake 3 bot (to me. Hunter?).
Every 3D game of id Software was stuffed with easter-eggs,
at least 1 big easter-egg in every game:
Quake1 -- fish from old game of id Software,
Quake2 -- Ferrari winner,
Quake3 -- model of John Carmack head (main programmer of 3D engine),
Doom2 -- level from Wolfenstein 3D (first FPS of id Software,
not counting HoverTank/Catacomb Abyss 3D).
http://www.idsoftware.com/games/vintage/hovertank/
Wolfenstein 3D -- "aardwolf" thing.

Even MS programs have easter-eggs in them.

Note: (the same place where this easter-egg occurs, kitchen, where you could
close/open windows shutters):
Billygoat burger is completely unrelated to anything or anybody.
Just as burger that is slightly bitten and is directing to it.

map: Mars City (the first one, the very beginning of the game),
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"Departure Lounge",
savefile place name: "Mars City",
console cheat command to load map: "map game/mars_city1".

To the right of "Information" stand there is brown poster:
"
MARS DELTA LABS
changing The Face
of Mars

UAC
UNION AEROSPACE
"
between the text "changing the face of Mars" and "UAC",
there is something that looks like face tilted at 45 degrees.

So, what this "face" means?

It was found (in real life, not in game) on one of photos from Mars,
after processing it.
Guys at id Software joked about it, but not only them:

Official documents and original photo (it's NASA official site):

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast24may_1.htm
http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/image/planetary/mars/face.jpg

"
May 24, 2001 -- Twenty five years ago something funny happened around Mars.
NASA's Viking 1 spacecraft was circling the planet,
snapping photos of possible landing sites for its sister ship Viking 2,
when it spotted the shadowy likeness of a human face.
An enormous head nearly two miles from end to end seemed to be staring back
at the cameras from a region of the Red Planet called Cydonia.
"

Also this poster could be found in
pak004.pk4:textures/decals/p_change_face.tga

pak004.pk4, as the rest of .pk4 files, is just a .zip file.
You can use some archiver to open it.
Or, in MS Windows XP/Me just temporarly
(restore filename to original before playing Doom 3) add .zip to its name
and then open it.

.tga files are pictures.

Only if you are experienced user:
In MS Windows: Use Tools - Folder Options - View - tick off

Don't ask me about that, i don't know any further details on MS Windows XP,
i won't answer.

map: Communications (Central communications tower),
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"satellite control centre",
savefile place name: "Communications".
console cheat command to load map: "map game/commoutside".

You have two choices: do a satellite transmission or cancel it.

Below the "Transmit Cancel" dialog there is some text, it starts moving,
the top string contains "PAN-CIP key IDSPISPOPD", it's Doom/Doom2 cheat code
(one of older id Software games).

See my page for link to original id Software Doom codes.

map: Unidentified (load screen with horned demon).
sector: the very beginning of level,
savefile place name: "Hell".
console cheat command to load map: "map game/hell1".

Besides, you could just look into PAK004.PK4
by temporarly renaming it into PAK004.PK4.zip and opening in MS Windows XP/2003.
Inside in "textureshell" folder is pentabase.tga (and the other penta* files)
-- the original texture, it's picture, you can view it with any picture viewer.

Of course, you could also use some archiver for opening .PK4 files
-- they are just standard .ZIP archives.

You start on a green pentagram, behind of you is teleporter's
red touch screen panel (with text "Searching for active alignment").
Walk up to this panel and turn around.

You'll see a pentagram -- and there is head of marine from Doom/Doom2,
like the one in Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3 (Easter-Egg 1).
It's to the left of one of two smaller circles in pentagram.
About the height of this head higher towards the center of the pentagram
is UAC symbol (two circles with triangle in center and UAC under them).

These pictures also appear in smaller versions of pentagrams
(of different color, usually fire color) and are all over the entire game,
even when monsters spawn, pentagrams appear,
but they are small and disappear very quickly.

console cheat command to load map: "map game/alphalabs1".

You could also load map with all PDAs/videodisks of game
(not including bonus ones) by typing "map game/pdas" cheat command in console.

It's level with all PDAs/videodisks and booths are with levelnames where they
could be found.

This PDA is in "ALP1" booth -- from Alpha labs - sector 1 level.

Jack Smith's e-mail:

"
From: Ari Braden
Subject: Buddy System?!
Date: 11-13-2145

Jack-
Please tell me UAC Corporate is kidding. How the hell is a buddy
system going to do anything with accident claims except double them?
Tell me how a buddy system would have prevented Joe 'Torsoboy' Moss
from having his arms and legs hacked off by the Albuquerck Capacitor?
Maybe his biddy would have heard the thing growl and engage without
power or a CRF module? Maybe his buddy's hair would have burst into
flames instead and saved us the trouble of needing to run and find water
to put him out.

Next thing they'll do is try to fix the problem by having us to fill out more
MAR forms or reforecast out ODF.

map: any with magazines.

Also they could be found inside
pak004.pk4:textures/object/mag[1..6].tga.
(pak004.pk4 is in Doom 3Base folder).

There are magazines in game:
"Booty" -- with Hunter bot (booty?) on cover from Quake 3,
"GameHog" -- with scared very pixelated guy and title "Doom Ultra XL"
(hehe, "Green and P?ssed").
Also "Doom Ultra XL" seems not "XL=extra large",
but rather "Doom Ultra 40" (latin numbers).
"Guns&Nachos" -- with some gun and some type of food in background.
"UAC today" -- with red stapler from "Office Space"
movie, see my page for link to movie plot.

map: none,
it's console cheat.

Type any of these classic Doom/Doom2 cheat codes in console
(you don't even have to press Enter as usually):

"idchoppers", "idclip", "iddqd", "idfa", "idkfa", "idspispopd".

(btw, "idchoppers" shows special message in Doom2. And "idspispopd"
is special abbreviation).

After typing any of these, you will get message:

"Your memory serves you well!" -- right in console.
It works only once after bringing console, so close console
to get the same message for another cheat.

map: any where texture of UAC logo "two spheres with triangle between them"
(Phobos and Deimos?) could be found, for example the first one.
There, after you start to the right of you is crate with that logo.

So, this UAC logo in Doom3 is the same as in Doom/Doom2.
Compare the pictures on my webpage.

Also, so called "boss shooter" in final level of Doom2 shoots cube
with skull pictures on it. Which then transforms into random monster.

It's like SoulCube in Doom 3, though the SoulCube idea was at time of creating
classic Doom.

Also read this id Software Doom 2 final screen text:
"
THE HORRENDOUS VISAGE OF THE BIGGEST
DEMON YOU'VE EVER SEEN CRUMBLES BEFORE
YOU, AFTER YOU PUMP YOUR ROCKETS INTO
HIS EXPOSED BRAIN. THE MONSTER SHRIVELS
UP AND DIES, ITS THRASHING LIMBS
DEVASTATING UNTOLD MILES OF HELL'S
SURFACE.
YOU'VE DONE IT. THE INVASION IS OVER.
EARTH IS SAVED. HELL IS A WRECK. YOU
WONDER WHERE BAD FOLKS WILL GO WHEN THEY
DIE, NOW. WIPING THE SWEAT FROM YOUR
FOREHEAD YOU BEGIN THE LONG TREK BACK
HOME. REBUILDING EARTH OUGHT TO BE A
LOT MORE FUN THAN RUINING IT WAS.
"

Maybe id Software hadn't enough time to create in Doom2 monster
with shootable head (game engine wasn't supporting body regions),
so they created wall texture instead and John Romero's head picture as boss
(and reversed speech).
In Doom3 they finally created that "biggest demon" (CyberDemon).

Thanks to Zack Friedrich for information on SoulCube.

map: any which contains "Mixom",
for example, the first one.

In Doom3 there are many references to Mixom.

What this Mixom means?

In PDA with thank-you's from id Software there are two e-mails that explain it:

the one from Andy Chang (subject "Dirt") and the one from Kenneth Scott.

You could get this PDA by typing "map game/hellhole" cheat in console,
then going down the stairs to the left of "boss wall" and pressing brick
(you will have to crouch) with letters "id" on it.

Or you could get it by typing "give pda hellhole_id" cheat in console
on any level.

You have to activate the reactor first (and its your current game objective

The reactor itself is really huge thing, you can't miss it.
Its approximately 15 minutes from level start.

So, in Reactor control room there are monitoRing station panels to the sides
of "Primary reactor control" panel. They show "45 RPS" and "33 RPS".

It's refer to turn times of turn-table discs, single and longplay respectively.
Also there are some arms, like the sound-reading arm on turn-table.

I can't find this texture applied to wall in game (and i saw one somewhere
while i was playing Doom 3), but look at file
pak004.pk4:texturesdecalsgraffiti2.tga, left-center image.
The file pak004.pk4 is located in Doom 3Base folder.
It's definitely image of perish, isn't it? (maybe also down-center, top-center
-- another image). Don't ask me what it means, i won't answer.

pak004.pk4, as the rest of .pk4 files, is just a .zip file.
You can use some archiver to open it.
Or, in MS Windows XP/Me (or maybe some other) just temporarly

It's all through the game in different places.
But on this level it's the closest to level start.

So, on that level go forward and enter that window, through which zombie flyes
willinglessly, on the right side in darkness there will be three laptops.

All of them contains the same message (if clicked -- it changes):
"
Power Outage
Battery Reserve On
Backup your files!
"
Just as many other people i thought it's some slight easter-egg by itself.
But there is real easter-egg on this screen, just make a screenshot
and flip/mirror it vertical and horizontal (upside-down and left-right)
in some graphical viewer program.

Also you could see the texture in PAK000.pk4:guisassetscommonpowerout.tga.
See (eegg15) previous easter-egg for information about that.

You'll see that the thing in upper-right corner is actually a message,
also text below (above) it reveals after clicking screen
(you have to use cheat for stopping time to shot it, go to my webpage):
"

cfm flow below benchmark

"

"CFM" stands for "cubic feet per minute" (measure unit for air flow).

Corrections ("cfm" (and what it means) instead of "dim" and "port"
instead of "part". Also texture name)
submitted by Jack Skellington.

Easter-egg 17

map: Mars City (the first one, the very beginning of the game),
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"Command HQ Control" (where you report to Sergeant Kelly),
savefile place name: "Mars City",
console cheat command to load map:
"map game/mars_city1".

In this sector, there are monitors displaying Mars surface.
Two small of them to the left of D.Morton shows
(also the one to the left-above him):
"128","256","512","1024".
Yes, that's like in computer (for example, amount of RAM).

The same numbers are on some other monitor displays,
completely unrelated to computers.

map: Mars City (the first one, the very beginning of the game),
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"Marine Headquarters"
(near "Command HQ" door, where you report to Sergeant Kelly),
savefile place name: "Mars City",
console cheat command to load map: "map game/mars_city1".

There is man with name "V.King" (Viking? Like in Easter-egg 2?)
sitting and typing something near the "Command HQ" door.
Above him there is monitor ("Mars Base Communications Terminal")
with "Encrypted Data Traffic".

If you'll look at the text (use console cheat of stopping time to stop it),
you'll see that the only text that have "-" (minus) sign is "-386".
It was the CPU which Doom 1 required - Intel 80386, the lesser one (80286)
had no arithmetic coprocessor, so it wasn't able to run Doom 1.

map: any with lift in it.

On bottom of lifts' switches some banners are displayed, among of them the one,
which have this text:
"
Interplanetary Cargo Delivery
Not Just Fast
It's EXE Fast
"

Also there are boxes with the text "exe" of the same colors, throughout the game.

See my page for link to website of company (possibly) referenced here.

Easter-egg 20

map: Mars City (the first one, the very beginning of the game),
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"Command HQ Control"
(near "Command HQ" door, where you report to Sergeant Kelly),
savefile place name: "Mars City",
console cheat command to load map: "map game/mars_city1".

(but also any other map containing "esta.og" on some screen).

In front of Sergeant Kelly there is screen with text:
"c::Scanning data > load esta.og > ld" (it's "ld", not "id").

"esta.og" could be read backwards.
In this case it could be the joke about closed down wicked adult content site
(the site wasn't suitable for ages below 18 or 21
(or more, depends on your country) Also remember that it's really wicked
and shocking. Anyway, it was closed down).

map: Primary Excavation. Artifact dig (the last level),
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"unidentified" (the place of final battle),
savefile place name: "Primary Excavation Site",
console cheat command to load map: "map game/hellhole".

Also on this level the hellhole itself is kinda strange...

map: Unidentified,
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"unidentified",
savefile place name: "Hell",
console cheat command to load map: "map game/hell1".

Also on this level there is tunnel after falling down in cage
and fighting the monsters.

See my page for further info (but not the link to site and do not mail me
asking for a link. There are search engines for finding things on Internet.
!Also don't mail me asking what it means!).

Submitted by B.H. (what "esta.og" could mean when read backwards).
(he didn't answer my e-mail asking for his name to be posted.
So until he answers, it's this way).

Easter-egg 21

map: Delta Complex,
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"CPU Access",
savefile place name: "Delta Labs Sector 5",
console cheat command to load map: "map game/delta5".

At the end of the level -- near "transfer bay" (transferring to next level)
door, there is "Valuable sacrificial pointers" informational console
(with Revenant -- skeleton monster with two shoulder cannons, standing near it).
The text -- "UAC Delta Research 1" on display changes really fast to either:
"CDIE4U-1B166 M&4ITG1"
or
"HELLAWAITS2 KILL-YOU"
or
"DEATH-HB9ZO 1&4ITGHU"

It changes so fast that the cheat for stopping is needed to see it,
the cheats are on

map: Mars City (the second one),
sector (the text in lower left corner of the screen):
"Sec ops processing",
savefile place name: "Mars City".
console command to load map:
"map game/mars_city2".

Also this text is throughout the game.
There is also one level where it's the repeating texture on a wall.

You enter the door, which requires ACO card, past this room,
leaving door in the next small room with TD4 (3 orange, 1 blue):
just after the door near TD4 units:

in the room where light will suddenly turn off, to the right there are
blood smudge and steam to the right of it,
to the left there are multicolored things in darkness.
Go up to these things, on one of walls there are blue screens of UAC computers,
one of them (the left one) lower than the others,
above of them and to the left there is inscription:
"
137.000 MHz
menu press <-
"

Such frequency is a normal thing for a pager.
Display with only two lines is also a normal thing for a pager
(first cellphones had the same number of lines (or even less),
but their frequency was definitely not like this).

See my page for a link to pager definition.

Q: You was playing the game or you was just searching the easter-eggs
by snapping every wall texture and inspecting it with magnifying glass?
Do you intend to further find easter-eggs?
A: I WAS just playing the game, but now i'm easter-egg hunting Doom3.
Hopefully, there will be other easter-eggs finders,
which have much more time to do this than me.
Though, i don't think there will be as much easter-eggs in Doom3...

Q: What all these easter-eggs for and why they did them?
A: I don't know, probably just for fun. Even Microsoft had put some sort
of flight simulator in some versions of MS Office,
so it's not only game-makers habit.

Q: Do you have any of these 1 Gigabyte precious e-mail accounts ?
A: No, i have an e-mail account with 2 MB and it's enough for me.
