A few days I was looking for a way to play Lotus III but my PC is too
fast so the game doesn't run but...I found this great emulator called
dosbox that runs all odl games, I'll explain this in the 2.1 section.
Anyway, now I finally can play this great game again I searched for it
on GameFaqs but suprisingly it wasn't in the database so I added it :)
I'm now writing this guide to encourage other games to play this game.
If you liked Tyrian you surely want to play it! Let's get started!

2. The Game

The main things of the game will be explained here, like how to play it
on a fast computer, the story and other general things related to this
game.

2.1 How to play on a fast computer
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, if you have an old computer with 32mb there is nothing to worry
you'll be able to play the game just fine. ALthough if you own a fast
nowadays computer and not an old one you'll get a problem like me.
No matter what you try the game just won't work (if you got your game
working with only some windows configurations please let me know).
First you'll need DosBox, a great Dos X86 emulator.
Get it here: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1
When you've installed it you'll need to mount a folder with all the games
in it (sub directories are allowed). To mount a folder just type this:
(my HD and folder with my old games)
mount g g:/Games
you'll need to do this each time you start DosBox, if you don't want to
just open the dosbox config file with notepad and put that line at the
bottom of the document.
Or...if you don't want to mount things t all you can download a frontend
that's a program that will mount the folders for you. If you have any
more questions about dosbox please visit the dosbox forum on their site.
Now that you've installed dosbox properly it's time to get Highway Hunter
because it's abandonware you can get it easily when you search google.

2.2 Story

Five years ago the Axis of Allied Planets took over Earth and installed
terraformers to reshape the environments and make it more hospitable for
offworlders. unfortunately the terraformers are killing all human life.
After a stint at freedom-fighting, you were captured and put into an
"adjustment camp" working in the garage. You helped develop the
Multi-Attack Super Turbo Energy Ranger (MASTER), a prototype vehicle
that the aliens will use to annihilate any remaining resistance. Seeing
your chance, you steal the master and break out of prison.You must now
punch through the prison's security perimeter, rejoin the
partisans, destroy the terraformers, and save your world!
Objective :
You are still within the controled boundaries of the Axis of
Allied Planets. Use your MASTER to defeat their defenses and escape to
freedom.

2.4 Game Review

~ Introduction ~
Finally, I found a great dos emulator so I could play this golden oldie
again. After some time of playing this game I decided to write this
review. Like I said, it's not as good as Tyrian but if you liked that
game you definitely will like this one too!
~ Game Play ~ 8.5/10
This game is a 2D Driving shooting game. In Tyrian you control a ship,
here you drive a high tech spy hunter like car. While playing there will
be other enemy cars, air planes, and other weird things on the road to
shoot. Yes, that's right, you drive on the road that goes from left to
right, if you play the game on the fastest it can you'll get seasick
when playing some levels. Each level has it's own level boss,some are
easy, some are hard but on your way you'll find weapon upgrades
(if you shoot with them too much you'll loose your upgrade after a while)
and shields (front shields & circling shields, they won't last forever,
when hit too much or after some time they disappear). I think this game
also came from the arcade, because you also have a high score table.
Shoot as many enemies as you can to get bonuses and other stuff.
~ Story ~ 8/10

~ Graphics & Music ~ 10/10
These are just great, all levels have their own backgrounds and
enemies, sometimes you drive on a road high above a machine city where
some kind of robots and cannons are shooting on you, or above some kind
of jungle where camouflaged tanks are driving along with fighting jets.
The music is very cool, it never gets annoying. When you shoot you hear
your weapons go and if you launch rockets you hear them moving.
~ Play Time / Replay Value ~ 9/10
There are 3 episodes, with a lot of missions so you'll be busy for some
hours. Try to shoot as many things as you can to get the highest score!
There is nothing new when you beat the game, just try again and play on
a higher difficulty or faster game speed to make the game harder.
~ Overall ~ 9/10
Tyrian's little brother, good if you can't get a copy or you're tired
of tyrian, else you should buy Tyrian 2000.
Rent or Buy? See if you can get it and be sure to have an old PC or
the dosbox emulator.

In this section you'll find all things like what the MASTER is, how to
use the weapons, why are they decreasing after a while and so on.

3.1 The MASTER
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MASTER: Multi-Attack Super Turbo Energy Ranger
The MASTER is a prototype vehicle that you stole from the aliens while
working in their garage when they captured you. This highly sofisticated
driving machine can get some pretty cool weapons like a rocket launcher
an Ion beam annd so on. Also it's defence will be better when you apply
the front shield or the circling one.

3.2 Controls

Keyboard : - Arrows keys ==> move your vehicle
- Space Bar ==> fire the current weapon
- P ==> Pauses the game
- ESC ==> Quits the game
Mouse : - Mouse move ==> move your vehicle
- L Mouse btn ==> fire the current weapon

3.3 Weapons

A list of the weapons and descriptions will come soon.
After some ime when you've shot too much you'll see the weapon bar at the
bottom of the screen decrease, when it's completely gone your weapons will
decrease to the previous ones.

3.4 Shields
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shields protect you from beeing hit by enemy fire. There are 4 kinds of
shields, the front shield, cyclone shield, circle shield and + Shield.
You can only get one shield at a time so watch the shield bar at the right
bottom of the screen, when it's gone your shield will disappear too!
Front shield : Can hold enemy fire that is fired in front of you, it will
also destroy enemies hit with it.
Cyclone shield : It floats around the MASTER and will stop incoming fire
when it hits it. Like the front shield it also destroys
enemy vehicles and planes when hit.
Circle shield : This shield will fly in front of you but it will remain
on the same place when you drive a bit back.
+ Shield : This shield goes from left to right in front of your ship.

3.5 Power Ups

Highway Hunter has 4 Power ups.
All power ups are in metal floating rounds with a letter in it except the
shields. These power ups only last for a limited time. Use wisely.
U : Upgrade weapon for maximum fire power
O : Temporary invincibility
C : Take power from all enemies

4.1 Walkthrough

Note that not all info given will be 100% the same if you play on another
difficulty.
4a Episode 1 - Evil Drivers
***************************
4a-1 - The escape!
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You drive in a city, destroy the vehicles along the way, at the middle of
the level you have to be careful with the cannons because they shoot at
the road and you'll receive damage whne you're driving on that part of
the road, also pay attention when you'll see the helicopters, they can
do harm too! At the end of this level you'll need to beat Megatank.
4a-2 - Flee from security!
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
Your quest goes on, now you'll drive above some kind of abondoned city.
Becareful with the jets, like the helicopters in the first level they
shoot rockets so destroy those with your gun or shield. At the end of the
level you'll meet Tripicopter.
4a-3 - Keep going!
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You're above some jungle like landscape, notice the air jets flying at
both sides of the road, you"ll need to destroy them half way of the level
along with some rockets that will be shot horizontally on the road.
Before you reach the rocket field you'll have to destroy mines but be
careful whne you shoot them because when they explode there will be send
bullets to all directions. The boss of this level is an Army Fighting
Helicopter
4a-4 - Desert run!
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You're now in a desert. After a while it'll be snowing, talking about a
weird desert! Later some kind of widescreen ships will come on the road
from both sides and watch out when they begin to shoot because their
bullets hurt! The boss that you'll ecounter now is the Desert Killer
4a-5 - Snakeway
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You drive somewhere in a cavern or something. Be carefull with those long
ships "snake ships". Watch out for the little bomb along the way that
shoot red bullets. Boss at this level is the Evil tank, the final boss of
the first episode (3 episodes - 5 levels each). Up to pisode 2!
4b Episode 2 - The Lost Roads

4b-1 - A captain and his ship

You drive on a road above the sea. At the middle of the level ships will
Come near the road and shoot red dots on it. At the end you'll find a
starship.
4b-2 - Highway Run

You're on a highway. You'll find the enemies you've encountered in the
first level ofthe first episode. Now the gameplay is a bit faster.
New enemies are littles jets. At the end you'll meet Redeyes
4b-3 - Deep Space
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You're in space, finally! The level starts with a boss battle with the
Vampire Ship. You can't hit it yet, after like 5 minutes of flying it
finally decides to shoot at you.
4b-4 - Another road
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You fly somewhere high above clouds. The enemies you see are like race
cars but easy to shoot. The jets flying at the left & right of the road
will leave red dots on it. After a while green rockets will be flying
your way so pay attention! Fight at the end with Schumacher! ^^
4b-5 - Hot 'n Spicy Dragon!
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You drive on a road above a huge spine. You'll find gargoyles shooting
at you! Also be careful of the spider on the road. After a while you see
something that looks like a huge fly :) but it leaves some huge eggs!
After a while huge bombs will fly over the road. At the end what do you
see? You were driving on a Dragon-snake thing!
4c Episode 3 - Anarchy

4c-1 - Ice!
°°°°°°°°°°°
You drive above ice! You'll encounter grey dots, those are almost
unbeatable! After a while it'll begin to snow. At the end you'll find
Grizzly Snake.
4c-2 - MASTER in the Far West!
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You drive in the far west! When you shoot air balloons red dots will come
out so be careful. Boss battle is the Black Jaguar
4c-3 - Almost!
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You're almost escaped keep up the good work! Again ships wil come from
both sides on the road and will shoot at you. At the end you'll meet
Buzz Buzz the fly! ^^ :D
4c-4 - On your way to the finish
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You drive above a jungle on a wooden road. Most enemies are the same from
the ones of the 3rd level of the first episode. It'll start raining after
a while. Second obstacle wil be rockets that will float over the road.
After like 5 mintes the boss finally appears, it's another tank,
Megatank The Second.
4c-5 - Highway Hunter
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
You drive on a highway to freedom! There are red dot shooting bombs on
the side of the road. After a while there wil be road blocks with
electricity, you need to destroy the machines on the side of the road
to stop it flow.After a while barrels will come down so try to avoid them
At the end you'll find the final boss. After you've beaten him, enter
your name and you'll be in the high score! THE END, you have now beaten
Highway Hunter!

4.2 Boss Guide

4a-1
Megatank : This tank will fire from his 4 guns so first shoot at the
upper part of the machine so you won't need to evade those
lasers all the time, when you've done that just drive in the
middle of the tank so the other two guns won't be able to hit
you, keep shooting until it explodes.
4a-2
Tripicopter : This helicopter like machine shoots red bullets at you.
You can shoot those so this boss isn't hard, still you need
to watch out for the jets because they keep coming!
Keep shooting at his three wings and he'll crash.p
4a-3
Army Fighting Helicopter : Be careful with this guy, first shoot his main
gun at the middle of the helicopter.
When that's destroyed you'll get a healing
item, now you'll have to shoot at the two sides
When both sides are destroyed the middle part
will shoot rockets, just keep hitting him
because the rockets will be destroyed by
your gun.
4a-4
Desert Killer : This werid tank-look-alike has two bots flying around him
Those two shoot so you'll need to destroy those first.
Now things get hard, the two large cannons are activated
and shoot big lasers at you, remain in the middle of the
tank and focus on one gun at a time. When you pick up the
cyclone shield along the way just let it hit the guns by
driving really close to the middle of the tank.
4a-5
Evil Tank : First shoot the guns at both sides. After the both died the
tank will shoot red bullets all over the place so try not to
beeing hit by them.
4b-1
Starship : First you need to destroy the guns at the bottom of the ship.
When you've done that, just keep hitting the ship and you'll
defeat it. Can't be easier!
4b-2
Redeyes : This is a machine with a face :) it has red eyes! Anyway,
watch out for his grab arms, you'll need to shoot those first.
When those are gone you win.
4b-3
Vampire Ship : This ship looks like a vampire bat so that's why I call it
so. The front guns will start shooting at you so try to
aim at the wings.
4b-4
Schumacher : A Formula 1 racing car, try to evade his red dots and shoot
at the connection between the car and the wheels.
4b-5
Dragon-Snake : The eyes! The eyes!! Yes, you need to hit it's eyes.
Watch out for his tongue, when he blows some gas out of
his nose he'll put his tongue! When both eyes are gone
keep hitting the head and you'll win.
4c-1
Grizzly Snake : Just hit him but be careful when he goes forward.
4c-2
Black Jaguar : Just keep hitting him, watch out for the red dots.
4c-3
Buzz Buzz : This is a mechanical fly, shoot on his eyes first but watch
out for the laser he shoots from his mouth. Orange dots will
appear from the hole when an eye is gone. After both are gone
keep hitting him and he'll die.
4c-4
Megatank The Second : Hit the gun on top of the tank first. After that's
destroyed, grey dots will be popping out of the
hole, just keep hitting the main part of the tank.
4c-5
Final Boss : Keep hitting him in the middle.After that destroy his arms
and his guns. After that this is destroyed keep shooting on
what's left but be careful with the large red dots.

4.3 Tactics

There aren't much tactics to give you, but the only thing I can say is:
- Don't keep shooting because your ammo will be gone after a while
- Don't miss any shields on the road because they're very usefull
- Try to stick on the bottom of the road, never fly at the top
- Always drive in the middle of the road
- Always shoot the hard enemies first
- Maybe more coming soon if someone sends me some.
